China and USA hydropower development and environmental protection seminar held in Chengdu

In order to strengthen the communication between China and USA on hydropower development and environmental protection, Sichuan Environment and Engineering Appraisal Center (SEEAC), invited Desiree Tullos, associate professor from Oregon State University ,and Kefeng Li, Professor from Sichuan University, held “China and USA hydropower development and environmental protection seminar” in Chengdu on September 13th. About 40 experts and representatives from the Sichuan Academy of Environmental Sciences, PowerChina Chengdu Engineering Corporation Limited, Sichuan University, Southwest Jiaotong University, China Three Gorges Corporation, Yalong River Hydropower Development Co., Ltd attended the seminar. The seminar was hosted by Honglei Wang, the deputy director of SEEAC, and Huiwen Yu, the deputy director of Sichuan Environmental Protection Department and Party members, attended the seminar.

Combined experience in the United States, associate Professor Desiree Tullos introduced the problems and cost of the aging infrastructure of dams and dam removal, compared the development and impact of hydropower with different size, proposed cumulative environmental and ecological impact of small hydropower, and introduced measures to solve cumulative impacts taking as ecological flow case an example. Combined with practical experience, Professor Kefeng Li described the research status of the water environmental impact of hydropower prediction and mitigation measures, including affects of water temperature, water quality, water body eutrophication, river ecological water requirements, high dam sluice dissolved gas supersaturation and fish.

    

At the meeting, the participants actively communicated two experts with the US dam removal, small hydropower development, fish conservation, watershed protection of the EIA of China Project. The seminar helps participants to improve acquaintance of impact on the ecological environment of the hydropower development, construction, operation and removal process, and foster the exchange of experience between the two countries in hydropower development and environmental protection.
